Basketball Court Size Standards and Variances Between Court Types

Officially the basketball court size ,dimensions and measurements are fixed for each of the different levels of play. If you are looking for the perfect measurements to build your own basketball court then you are landed on a correct page, just read throughout and discover your answers.

The Basketball court size varies on three levels viz. High School / College level, NBA level, International level. However among these three different levels there are numerous aspects that are the same, such as the basket height and the free throw line.

Bellow are the basket ball court dimensions explained for each and every level.

Standards for all courts:

1) The Foul Line:

For all the basketball courts the Foul Line is exactly at 15 feet from front of the backboard.

2) The Key:

The key i.e lane is 12 feet wide for all basketball courts.
Standard for all basketball courts, “the key” (sometimes called “the lane”) is 12 feet wide. Backboard is extended 4 feet over the baseline into the key. Key is completed by a 6 feet half circle (arc) extension from the foul line away from the basket.

3) The Backboard and Rim:

The distance of rim is exact 10 feet above the ground for all levels of play. Backboards are the “feet inches by 4 feet” rectangles. The inner rectangle on the backboard is 24 inches wide and 18 inches tall. The basketball rims (hoops are) 18 inches in diameter for all levels of play.
The line markings on the court floor are 2 inches broad and may vary in color.

 

High School / College Basketball Court Dimensions: 

Basketball court size is not fixed to any standards, it varies in its overall length and width. A huge diffrence in Basketball court size may be experienced within Junior High Schools, High Schools and Colleges. This diffrence may be in the sense of overall size and layout however the interior markings for – The Key, The Four Line and The Backboard and Rim are the same. The NBA court has a unique 3 point line (arc) while High school and college basketball courts have same 3 point line (arc) measurements.

 

1. Basketball court size:

Junior High school – 74 feet long and 42 feet wide
High School – 84 feet long and 50 feet wide
College – 94 feet long and 50 feet wide

2. The 3 Point Line (Arc):

For High School and College basketball courts the 3 point arc is 19 feet and 9 inches. Within the 3 point arc a straight line extends out 63 inches from the baseline.

NBA Professional Basketball Court Dimensions:

1. Basketball court size:
NBA Professional – 94 feet long and 50 feet wide

2. The 3 Point Line (Arc):

For NBA Professional basketball courts the 3 point arc is 22 feet to the center of the rim on the sides. Within the 3 point arc a straight line extends out 16 feet 9 inches from the baseline.

International Basketball Court Dimensions:

1. Basketball court size:
International – 28 m long and 15 m wide.

2. The 3 Point Line (Arc):

For international basketball courts the 3 point arc is 6.25 meters (20 feet 6 in) from the basket In the e International Basketball court the key angles away from the basket. Also the 3-point line is slightly beyond the circle above the key. These changes in international basketball court size and layout make the shot more challenging.

    man this is a tough one. I think it maybe different for high sohcol, college, and the NBA.I know it’s considered out of bounds in one of those leagues.But the only thing I know FOR SURE I remember seeing a highlight reel one time in the 80s and Isiah Thomas had a shot. He took it from the baseline and the ball hit the top of the backboard it bounced like 3 times on the top of the backboard and fell in. The basket counted.I couldn’t tell you whether it’s out of bounds or in bounds, but I can tell you for absolute certainity I saw that play on a highlight reel.
